Attendance: It's All Our Job
How important is it for students to be in school every day? Regular attendance helps students feel better about school–and themselves.
Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. Students who don’t show up to school miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Students can start to fall behind by missing just one or two days every few weeks. If large numbers of students are frequently absent, the entire class may have difficulty building their skills.
School success goes hand in hand with good attendance. Engaging students and nurturing their love of learning from an early age helps students learn the importance of being at school on time every day. At Romoland School District (RSD) we aim to promote a culture of kindness and engaging school climates that keep students excited about school. Schools are most effective when parents, guardians, school leaders, and community members work together to reduce absences. Creating positive relationships with our students and families is essential to our schools’ success.
As we continue to address the importance of attendance, we all can all make a difference by following these helpful tips:
- Make school attendance a priority.
- Create a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Make sure students get at least 8 hours of sleep.
- If your student feels anxious about school, talk to your student’s teacher, school counselor, administrators, or even other parents for advice on how to make them feel more comfortable and excited about learning
- Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
- Avoid extended trips when school is in session.
Communicate with the school and learn your school’s attendance policy.Continuing to make attendance a part of our daily conversations will ensure we all help our students succeed!
