AVID: Another Way We Ensure All Students Succeed

The Achievement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Harvest Valley Elementary School helps all students learn and practice vital organizational and academic skills to help them be successful in elementary school, as well as prepare them for success in middle school, high school, and higher education.

By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID teachers help create a ripple effect in later grades. AVID students develop the habits and skills they will need to be successful in their academic career, in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Our students learn about organization, study skills, communication, collaboration, and self-advocacy. They regularly engage in learning experiences across all subject matters that require them to think critically and ask thought provoking questions that go beyond routine answers.

At Ethan A. Chase Middle School, the AVID program continues to support  students on their paths to college by explicitly teaching note-taking, study skills, organization, critical reading and writing, and inquiry. Students have the opportunity to work together to problem solve and learn to articulate what they don’t understand through small group tutorials. AVID Elective students conduct tutorials twice per week, helping them dig deeper into academic content and gain confidence in what they have learned. By reflecting on their learning, they master content rather than just repetition  and memorization.

A vital element of AVID is the knowledge that regardless of their life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. AVID practices help students learn that they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them. To top it all off, our students love AVID!
