National History Day

ROMOLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT NATIONAL HISTORY DAY

What is National History Day?

National History Day is a year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topic's significance in history, and create final projects that present their work. These projects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where they are evaluated by historians and educators. Winners advance in each level of competition, concluding at the national competition held in June each year in College Park, Maryland.

This year is the 50th anniversary of  National History Day. The theme, Rights & Responsibilities in History, will allow students to research and create final projects as a poster, podcast, website, documentary, historical paper, performance, or exhibit. Learn more at National History Day: nhd.org/en/ and National History Day – California: nhdca.org.

The key to this theme is addressing BOTH rights AND responsibilities. These are two powerful forces in history, but one does not work without the other.
