Gifted and Talented Education
Romoland GATE Criteria and Identification Process
Romoland School District is dedicated to providing equitable opportunities for all students to be considered for our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program.
To support this commitment, all second-grade students are assessed each fall using the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, Third Edition (NNAT3). The NNAT3 is a nonverbal, culturally neutral assessment designed to measure visual-spatial reasoning and identify gifted learners. Students who score at or above the 92nd percentile on the NNAT3 qualify for placement in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. Those scoring between the 85th and 91st percentiles are recommended for retesting in the spring of third grade.
Additionally, third-grade students who either missed the second-grade assessment or enrolled after it was administered may be recommended for testing in the spring of their third-grade year by their teacher or parent/guardian. Likewise, students in grades 4–8 may be referred for GATE testing by a teacher or parent/guardian in accordance with Administrative Regulation (AR) 6172.
Students in grades 4–8 are not automatically retested. A referral must be initiated by a teacher or parent/guardian, and students must demonstrate multiple characteristics associated with giftedness to be considered for reassessment.
