Gifted and Talented Education
Romoland GATE Criteria and Identification Process
Romoland School District is committed to ensuring equitable opportunities for student identification into our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. As a result, all second grade students are tested is the spring on the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT2) to determine eligibility for GATE. The NNAT2 is a non-verbal, culturally neutral, visual/spatial test that is designed to identify gifted students.
Students in grades three through eight may be referred to take the OLSAT8 Test in the spring for gifted identification. The OLSAT8 measures cognitive abilities that relate to academic success through verbal, non-verbal, and quantitative ability. In either of the above scenarios, parents/guardians are given the opportunity to opt-out of the assessment should they desire to not have their student participate.
Eligibility for GATE is based on a 95th percentile ranking or higher on the NNAT2 or a 93rd percentile ranking on the OLSAT8 test. Second grade students scoring 87%-94% on the NNAT2 are recommended for retesting in the spring of third grade using the OLSAT8 test. Students in grades four through eight may be referred/recommended for testing by their teacher or parent/guardian per Administrative Regulation (A.R.) 6172.
