AVID is an acronym and stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Started in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson at Clairemont High School in San Diego, AVID served a single class of 32 students. In its almost 30 years, AVID has grown to serve nearly 2,000,000 students from Kindergarten through higher education and is implemented in 6,400 schools in 47 states, Canada, and Australia.
In the AVID Elective, students receive academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in the most rigorous courses.
